New Moon Study – Observing the beginning of the Month God’s Way

To observe God’s holy days at their proper time it is most important to understand how to correctly observe the faithful witnesses that God has created for the observation of time and “moedim”.  The enemy seeks to confuse man as to the times and the moedim (God’s appointed times) so as to prevent men from the blessings that God has intended on these holy days when we can be unified together with Him.  The following study is not based in tradition nor in speculation but solely on the Word of God along with references from some the Dead Sea Scroll Books which were considered scripture by the ancient world and preserved by the Essenes in the Qumran caves and quoted from by Yeshua and the Disciples.

The Moon was Created as one of the Heavenly witnesses:

Gen. 1:14-19 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons (moedim/ holy appointed feast days), and for days, and years: 15  And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. 16  And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. 17  And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, 18  And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. 19  And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

Psa 136:7  To him that made great lights: for his mercy endureth for ever:

Psa 136:8  The sun to rule by day: for his mercy endureth for ever:

Psa 136:9  The moon and stars to rule by night: for his mercy endureth for ever.

The course of the moon’s path to the righteous is light, but to sinners it is darkness; in the name YHVH of hosts, who created a separation between light and darkness, and separating the spirit of men, strengthened the  spirit of the righteous in the name of His own righteousness! – Enoch 41:6

Why is this?  It is because the course of the moon like the sun teaches a lesson in that it starts from darkness and moves to full illumination just as the righteous turn men from the darkness of misunderstanding to the light of true understanding.  Daniel 12:3 says, “they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever. ”

The Moon is called a faithful witness:

It shall be established for ever as the moon, a faithful witness in heaven. – Ps. 89:37

The sun, moon and stars are given a law to conform to:
Ps.148:3,6 Praise ye him, sun and moon: praise him, all ye stars of light. 4  Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens. 5  Let them praise the name of the LORD: for he commanded, and they were created. 6  He hath also established them for ever and ever: he hath made a law which shall not pass.

Enoch 73:13 The moon brings on all the years exactly, that their stations may come neither too forwards nor too backwards a single day…

The order of the moon from darkness to light:

Enoch 77:12- Uriel showed me another regulation, when light is poured into the moon, how it is poured into it from the sun.  All the time that the moon is in progress with its light, it is poured in the presence of the sun, until light is in fourteen days COMPLETED in heaven.  And when it is wholly EXTINGUISHED, its light is called the NEW MOON, for on that day light is received into it.  It becomes precisely completed on the day that the sun descends into the west, while the moon ascends at night from the east.

The terms “extinguished”, consumed”, and “new moon” in this verse are all ways of saying “CONJUNCTION MOON” is the New Moon and start of the month!

I Sam. 20:5 David was able to predict new moon feasts by knowing the conjunction darkness falls 15 days after the full moon.

Every timepiece of Yah’s in the heavens begins in darkness and moves to the light (i.e. day, month, and year):

Gen. 1:5  And the evening (first) and the morning (second) were the first day.

Ex. 12:18  In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at evening, ye shall eat matzah, until the twenty-first day of the month at evening.

Jub. 12:16 Avram sat up throughout the night on the New Moon of the seventh Month to observe the stars from the evening to the morning, in order to see what would be the character of the year…

Why did Avram stay up on the new moon of the seventh month… it is called “the day of darkness” in Joel 2 and is a holy day foreshadowing the coming day of the Messiah as well as he would have been able to see the stars better on a completely dark moonless night!

The New Moon is the conjuction of complete darkness and the beginning of the MONTH (Not the sighted crescent):

Enoch 72:1 “After this law I beheld another law of an inferior luminary, the name of which is the moon, and the orb of which is as the orb of heaven…

At the time that it appears, and becomes to you the beginning of the month. -Enoch 72:5

Enoch 72:8 On that night when it commences its period (the conjunction), previous to the day of the month, the moon sets with the sun.

And when it (the moon) is wholly extinguished (totally dark), its light is consumed in heaven; and ON THE FIRST DAY IT IS CALLED THE NEW MOON, for on that day light is received into it (the first ray from the sun around the earth not visible with the naked eye). – Enoch 77:14

Enoch 78:2-3 …the decrease of the moon (the moon’s light), which is effected in the sixth gate; for in that sixth gate is its light consumed.  From this is the beginning of the month.

Because the lunar cycle is 29.5 days, the months alternate 30 days and then 29 days… Enoch 77: 20  And at the time of its going forth during three months it appears thirty days each, and during three months it appears twenty-nine days each.

The New Moon is the First Day of the Month

Jub. 6:27 And on the New Moon of the tenth month the tops of the mountains were seen, and Noah was glad.  Gen. 8:5 And the waters decreased continually until the tenth month: in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, were the tops of the mountains seen.

New Moon = First Day = New month: Jub. 7:2  And Noah made wine therefrom and put it into a vessel, and kept it until the fifth year, until the first day, on the New Moon of the first month ( God’s new year ).  And he celebrated with joy on the day of this feast…

It was prophecied that Israel would forget how to observe the New Moons and Years!

Jub. 1:15 They will forget all my Torah and all my commandments and all my judgments, and will go astray as to New Moons, and Jubilees, and Shabbatot, and feasts, and jubilees, and ordinances.

Jub. 6:34 And  all the children of Israel (Ephraim dispersed among the nations) will forget and will not find the path of the years, and will forget the New Moons, and seasons, and Shabbatot, and they will go wrong as to all the order of the years. (Man has forgotten the order of the years from Creation and thus do not know when to expect Messiah!).

God’s Bride is standing on the Moon as her foundation in knowing God’s timings!

And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: – Rev. 12:1

God appointed the Moon for the observation of the holy “moedim” appointed feast days!

Ps. 104:19 “He appointed the moon for moedim: the sun knoweth his going down.

I Kings 8:2 Moon and month are directly connected… “all the men of Israel assembled themselves unto king Solomon at the (fall) feast in the moon (yerah) Ethanim, which is the seventh month (chodesh).

Fall equinox cycles are also important:

Ex. 34:22 Tequphah – and of the cycle “And thou shalt observe the feast of weeks, of the firstfruits of wheat harvest, and the feast of ingathering at the year’s cycle (tequphah – a revolution, that is, (of the sun) course, (of time).

If we observe a random calendar based on a chart apart from the moon and the equinox, then it is possible to observe Sukkot to early before the fruit is ready to harvest after the fall equinox!

Furthermore, Sukkot is only observed correctly if counted 15 days from the first day of the month, from the fully concealed new moon of the Day of Trumpeting leading up to the full moon of Tabernacles.

Ps. 81:3-4 Blow (תקעו – tawkah),  in the new month (בחדשׁ – chodesh), the shofar (שׁופר) in concealed (בכסה – keseh in the fully conceiled day ), leading to the day (ליום). For this was a statute for Israel, and a law of the God of Jacob.

The same Hebrew word “keseh” for concealed is used in Pro 7:19-20 as an allusion to Messiah’s coming on the New Moon: “For the goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey: He hath taken a bag of money with him, and will come home on the concealed day” (הכסא – Messiah will return on the fully concealed day of Yom Teruah… the day of trumpeting when the moon is fully concealed in conjuction)!

The coming day of the Lord, called Day of Trumpeting, is the only holy day that falls on a new moon… a day of darkness because the moon is not visible, and as such no one knows the day or the hour! (I Thess. 4:16; Joel 2:1)

Joel 2:1  Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand; a day of darkness

1Th 4:16-17  For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

The light of the moon is very symbolic, symbolizing God’s plan to lead the world from darkness to light!

Enoch 59:5 He (an angel) showed me the power of the moon’s light, that its power is a just one

1 Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.

The light of the moon increases from the first day of the month 14 days until the full moon.

Enoch 72:10 During the remainder of its period its light increases to fourteen portions.

Enoch 77:6 In fourteen the whole of its light is completed… vs 13 All the time that the moon is in progress with its light, it is poured in the presence of the sun, until light is in fourteen days completed in heaven.

We will be observing New Moons for all eternity… so it must be very important!

Isa. 66:22-23  For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain. And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.

God’s Heaven & Earth Calendar is a true double witness… using all God’s witnesses

Our witness in the Heavens – Sun, Moon, & Stars

Our witness in the Earth – Spring Aviv Barley

Deut. 4:2 says, “Do not add or subtract from… ”We should not subtract anything from scripture, especially God’s witness for establishing our months as this is how all can observe with their own eyes Yah’s timings and Holy Days:

Note: As good Bereans who only submit to Yah’s authority and word, we seek to only follow the whole word of Scripture  in determining Yah’s ways and timings, rather than follow the invented calendars and traditions of man.  For more information feel free to download this free PDF here: New Moon Study from Scripture – by Rabbi Isaac

  1. You are Correct concerning the NewMoon!
My preference is, since the full-moon is the exact middle of the month which has approx. 29.568 days, then I subtract 14 from the Full-Moon date for the NewMoon. Subtracting 15 will give you The Day of Preparation of The New Moon.

  2. In addition to the people forgetting the new moons, Hosea indicates that God would put an end to the new moons for Israel due to her harlotry.
Hosea 2:11 “I will also put an end to all her gaiety, her feasts, her new moons, her sabbaths, and all her festal assemblies”

    • That was only referring to the time that the Northern Kingdom would be in exile in foreign lands and assimilated largely into Christianity who follow the power who whould “think to change times and law” (i.e. the church – Dan. 7:25) before their awakening and repentance and return to Torah. “Then I heard another voice from heaven say: “‘Come out of her, my people,’ so that you will not share in her sins, so that you will not receive any of her plagues.” (Rev. 18:4)

  3. Shalom thanks for the confirmation! 🙂 I do have a question. Several who use the first visible New Moon Crescent to start the months will use scriptures such as Deuteronomy 16:1 that says to ‘observe’ the ‘month’. The word for Month is ‘chodesh’=New Moons and they say ‘observe’ is taken from the Hebrew Word ‘Shamar’ that means ‘to keep, watch, observe.’ They say we can’t ‘watch’ or ‘observe’ an invisible New Moon Conjunction. Does the context of that verse mean to verify the moon with the physical eye? Thanks for the wonderful article 🙂

    • We are also commanded to “observe” the weekly shabbat and yet there is nothing to look at in the heavens to determine the 7th day. Observing Yah’s moed timings is a matter of the heart (seeking to be in alignment with His ways) and by faith, set-apart as His people just as His timings are set-apart. Hope this helps!

      • @Isaac HalleluYah! Thank you so much 🙂 Shortly after I posted that question in 2021, I’ve started taking Hebrew from a Messianic Jew who offers classes and teaches genuine, biblical hebrew–what a blessing! He’s showed us what the biblical Hebrew is actually saying about Rosh Chodesh, dating all the way back to the ancient Pictographic language….no where does it ever refer to Rosh Chodesh as the Crescent Moon, a custom that was adopted via pagan worship, especially when the Yehudim were in Babylon/worship of the Moon G-d ‘Nanna’. Islam does this every month too, as do many religions. Their are so many g-ds of the nations that incorporate the Crescent Moon, even in Buddhism. The other amazing fact we learned is that Quarter Moons are always complete after 7 Full Days. When we see the waning quarter moon, it tells us there’s 7 days left in the month, and this is how David/Jonathan knew when Rosh Chodesh was going to occur prior to it! The people who start Rosh Chodesh on the Crescent Moon will come to the 15th Day of the Month and the Moon is no longer full….it’s already started waning! Their ‘full moons’ aren’t true full moons, and they don’t land on the quarter moons at the correct timing either. When we look at the New Moon, first waxing quater moon, full moon, and waning quater moon, we get the exact same pattern as the tabernacle/where everything was placed…and it all forms the letter ‘tav’ which is represented by 2 crossed sticks=also prophetic for the sacrifice of Yeshua…amazing correlations! 🙂

  4. Interesting, thank you.

This text also always bugs me:

Isaiah 1: 13. Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting. 14. Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them.
    http://bibliajfa.com.br/app/kjv_apocrypha/23O/1/13

However, I still need to study the time frame and context. How does this statement slot in? Perhaps someone could shed some light here.

    Many thanks again 🙏.

    • Since YHVH does not change we can know that He is not speaking against His own Holy Days as He outlined in Leviticus 23 but is simply rebuking those who cease to observe them in Holiness, either mixing in pagan practices from the nations or changing the days and the way to observe His Holy Days as was prophesied to happen. Today He is calling His people out of all pagan practices and back to His word and observance of His Holy Days His ways. He says through the prophet Yermiyahu that our forefathers inherited lies (Jer. 16:19) and that we need to return to the ancient paths (Jer. 6:16), which is what we are helping people do through articles like this. We hope this understanding blesses you and helps in your spiritual growth and understanding!

      • Thank you, it makes a lot more sense now. I am definitely looking forward to studying that book soonest.

We are in a study group looking at the book of Hebrews this year. In preparation for Hebrews, we had to look at the Torah. After searching for something online, I discovered your teachings on YouTube. I enjoy watching all your videos regarding the Torah and learning new things that I never knew. It really gives me a better understanding.

My most recent revelation was the word GIT (not certain of the spelling) in the video related to the twelve wedding steps. I was given the word long ago, but never knew what it meant until I watched your video.

Thanks again, everything you post is highly valued. I pray that The LORD will help us to worship him in the way He wants. Amen.

  5. Been learning a lot from your ministry and I am very fascinated about your in-depth learning and teaching about Yah’s feast and the new moon festival . Thank you very much and G_d bless.

  6. Wonderul teaching! Also, if we look when Lunar/Solar Eclipses that take place, they all occur on either the Renewing of the Moon or a Full Moon–signs which show your teaching 100% truth of the proper New Moon/how to observe them (Rev 12:1-2).

  7. If a new moon began, say 9am, would you commence the new moon festival then, or would you wait until sunset of that day, and then begin it? What is the “start” time for when the new moon begins?
