Principles of Prayer

Thoughts on The National Day of Prayer – May 4th…

Intercessory Prayer

Each week we have a segment in our service called “Family Time” where we share one another’s burdens, prayer requests, answered prayers, as well as our testimonies and praises! Even if you are not able to be at service or you live too far to be with us physically we think of you as part of our Eternal family and welcome you to share your prayer requests in the comment box below which we will pass on to our prayer team.

What does the Scriptures say?

There is no wrong time for prayer:

Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. – James 5:13

Rabbi Shaul tells us to constantly be in communication with God:

Pray without ceasing. – I Thess. 5:17

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. – Ephesians 6:18

Righteousness empowers the Prayer

It is important to note that there is a key element to the effectiveness prayer and that is our seeking to be right with God with a repentant heart and our return to “right doing” described doing what is right according to God’s word, also known as “righteousness”. James says,

The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” – James 5:16

The emphasis here is on righteousness which comes from the root meaning “to do rightly” according to God’s instruction.  The word for instruction in Hebrew is Torah… and keeping Torah is truly the key to overcoming sin and imbuing our prayers with power that manifest healing and change as it connects us with the source of life itself!

Psalm 145:18

The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.

Proverbs 28:9

If a person will not listen to Torah, even his prayer is an abomination.

Isaiah says that our sins (Torahlessness) separate us from God!

But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear. – Isaiah 59:2

This is very serious language and requires our repentance as you will see in the model for prayer by Daniel below.

Persistence in Prayer

Another important aspect of prayer is being persistant!  This is so important that Yeshua even told a parable conserning persistence to emphasis this in Luke 18:1-8 and likened it to the measure of our faith saying.

…will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?”

King David put it this way,

Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice. – Psalms 55:17

Shalu shalom Yerushalayim

Remember prayer is not just for your own personal needs but the true intercessor will pray for all God’s children who are in need and especially for the restoration of the whole house of Israel and God’s holy city Jerusalem and the age of Moshiach to come.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee. – Psalms 122:6

Remember God promised Abram to bless those who bless His people and His nation Israel!

I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:   And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. Gen 12:2-3

The Model of Daniel’s Intercessory Prayer for Israel

Last year we did a teaching on the hidden model for intercessory prayer as revealed by the prophet Daniel.  We found seven principles of Intercessory prayer and the model is as follows:

(Outline from Rabbi Isaac’s teaching)

1) REMEMBERING GOD’S CHARACTER
2) RECOGNITION OF SIN
3) REPENTANCE LEADING TO CONFESSION
4) RENOUNCING OUR TORAHLESSNESS
5) REMOVE THE EFFECTS OF OUR SIN
6) REPLACE THE LOST BLESSINGS
7) RESTORATION

In Chapter 9 we see Daniel start by, REMEMBERING GOD’S LOVING CHARACTER saying, “And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:   And I prayed unto the LORD my God, and made my confession, and said,

O Lord, the great and awesome God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and keep his commandments; – Dan 9:3-4

In verse 5 we see Daniel RECOGNIZE that Israel had sinned in transgressing God’s Torah… and includes himself with Israel in the spirit of intercession saying,

We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments:   Neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets, which spake in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land.

In verses 7-11 we see the importance of true REPENTANCE which in Hebrew is “Teshuva” which means “To return to God and His ways” which includes a return to Torah.

O Lord, righteousness belongs to thee, but unto us is shame of faces, as at this day; to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and unto all Israel, that are near, and that are far off, through all the countries whither thou hast driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against thee.

Sin is described in I John 3:4 as the “transgression of the Torah”, thus if we are going to truly repent we are going to return to Torah! And that is just what Daniel said in verse 10-11…

Neither have we obeyed the voice of the LORD our God, to walk in his Torah, which he set before us by his servants the prophets.   Yea, all Israel have transgressed thy Torah, even by departing, that they might not obey thy voice; therefore the curse is poured upon us, and the oath that is written in the law of Moses the servant of God, because we have sinned against Him.

In verse 13 we see the principle of now RENOUNCING OUR TORAHLESSNESS!

As it is written in the Torah of Moses, all this evil is come upon us: yet made we not our prayer before the LORD our God, that we might turn from our iniquities, and understand thy truth.

Then we Daniel asking to REMOVE THE EFFECTS OF OUR SIN (vs. 16)

O Lord, according to all thy righteousness, I beg thee, let thine anger and thy fury be turned away from thy city Jerusalem, thy holy mountain: because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and thy people have become a reproach to all that are about us.

Then Daniel focuses on praying for God to REPLACE THE LOST BLESSINGS and PROTECTION due to the effects of the sin which in his day lead to the destruction of the Temple (verse 17-18)

Now therefore, O our God, hear the prayer of thy servant, and his supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord’s sake.  O my God, incline thine ear, and hear; open thine eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city which is called by thy name: for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousness, but for thy great mercies.

RESTORATION AND FORGIVENESS

O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not, for thine own sake, O my God: for thy city and thy people are called by thy name.

We see that God then revealed to Daniel a vision of the future restoration when there would be a decree to restore Jerusalem and the following 70 week timeline (490 year using the day for a year principle) allotted for the Jewish people.

May we all learn to these principles of prayer and intercede for our brethren and for the restoration of Jerusalem the way Daniel did!  May we forsake our sin (Torahlessness) and return to the ancient paths!

This is what the LORD says:  Stand in the way and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls…  – Jeremiah 6:16

  1. Praise Yah! This post was an answer to a heart cry of mine for at least the last couple of years. Might be hard to believe it but it isn’t always clear how to follow Yah as the prophets did. While I may have been able to come across this some day on my own with Father’s help, your outline has helped. Thanks again for your obedience and giving up so much for us. We really do love you and I pray that it will always show! Father’s blessings your way. Shalom.
