A question often arises with sincere truth seekers who are not Jewish, “Is Purim a Biblical holiday?” The short answer is yes, and while it is not a Leviticus 23 mandated holy day to rest from work, it is ordained to be observed by Jews at the end of the Book of Esther on the 14th and the 15th of the twelfth month of Adar every year throughout all generations as a commemoration of how God delivers his people. This year that falls on Friday, February 26th.
According to Esther 9:17-19 God gave the Jews victory over their enemies on the thirteenth day of the month of Adar, and on the fourteenth they rested and made it a day of feasting and joy. 18The Jews in Susa, however, had assembled on the thirteenth and fourteenth, and then on the fifteenth they rested and made it a day of feasting and joy.
19That is why rural Jews—those living in villages—observe the fourteenth of the month of Adar as a day of joy and feasting, a day for giving presents to each other.
Esther 9:28 says, “These days should be remembered and observed in every generation by every family, and in every province and in every city. And these days of Purim should never fail to be celebrated by the Jews–nor should the memory of these days die out among their descendants”
Now one might say, “But I’m not Jewish… how does this apply to me?”
Even if you are not Jewish, but recognize yourself as a child of God and part of the greater Commonwealth of Israel, whether by descendancy or by belief in the God of Abraham Isaac and Jacob and are grafted in, it is truly an honor to identify with the past plights of our brother Judah and to rejoice in the commemoration of how God has delivered his people in all ages! God told Abraham in Genesis 12:3 I will bless those who bless you and I will curse those who curse you. After deeper meditation on the symbolism and significance of God’s deliverance one realizes how this applies to all God’s people.
The story of Purim is only one of many in history that reveals how God has miraculously delivered His people… sometimes seen physically against a physical enemy, and on a deeper revelation also spiritually against a spiritual enemy. At the time of Esther the story of Purim relates how the Jews were saved physically by the word of the King’s decree against the enemy of God’s people, but the time of their spiritual salvation and the complete fulfillment of God’s prophecies given to Abraham was yet to come in the Word made flesh!
The Word of the King Conquers the Death Decree Against us!
It happened five hundred years later with the word of the Heavenly King made flesh, Yeshua HaMashiach – coming to save God’s people from the spiritual enemy of death.
1Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Messiah Yeshua, 2because through Messiah Yeshua the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. 3For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, 4in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
5Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.6The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. – Romans 8:2-6
The last enemy to be destroyed is death. – 1 Cor. 15:26
Mordecai a symbol of Messiah
Yeshua is also like Mordecai in that although he was rejected and condemned to die, God turned the enemy’s curse into the greatest blessing and he became the ultimate deliverer of Jew and Gentile alike. In him were truly fulfilled the prophecies of old, “…All the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him” (Genesis 18:18).
Today we see millions of people in all parts of the earth who have received these blessings through Abraham’s seed, the Messiah, flesh of our flesh and bone of our bone.
Esther – a picture of Messiah as well as his faithful Bride
There is a smbolic picture of the three-day resurrection of Messiah hinted at when Esther fasted for three days, and on the third day she rose to go before the king. But there is also symbolism for us as Esther was the Bride of the king and exemplified an amazing strength in humbleness, and an intensity in her intercession for her people. Her fasting and praying for 3 days could symbolize how the Saints need to be persevering for the final three and a half years with fasting and praying during tribulus times. In Revelation 12:17 and Revelation 14:12 John sees in vision a picture of the end time holy people and bride of Messiah saying, “here is the perseverance of the Saints they that keep the Commandments of God and have the testimony of Yeshua!”
It is interesting to note that the evil intents of the enemy always begin to be made manifest and visible to God’s people at this time of Purim.
Haman was an astrologer, and when he was about to fix the time for the genocide of the Jews he first cast lots to ascertain which was the most auspicious day of the week for that purpose. Each day, however, proved to be under some influence favorable to the Jews. He then sought to fix the month, but found that the same was true of each month; thus, Nisan was favorable to the Jews because of the Passover sacrifice; Iyyar, because of the small Passover. But when he arrived at Adar he found that its zodiacal sign was Pisces, and he said, “Now I shall be able to swallow them as fish which swallow one another” (Esth. R. vii.; Targ. Sheni iii.).
Purim in Prophecy
The Prophet Daniel was shown a picture of the end-time of tribulation in Daniel 12 which he describes as worse than any other time in history since there has been a nation and that it will lead to the Deliverance of God’s people by Messiah’s coming. With a hebraic understanding of Messiah’s comings foreshadowed in God’s holy days we realize that Messiah will come on Yom Teruah (the day of trumpeting), the same day that Paul referred to in 1st Thessalonians 4:16 saying “Behold the Lord descends with a shout and the voice of the Archangel and the trumpet of God and the dead in Messiah shall rise first and we who are alive and remain shall be caught up with them.” When Daniel asked how long would this time of trouble extend, the answer given by the angel was 1260 days… until the power of the Holy people is completely shattered. This puts the beginning of the time of trouble just before Passover time in the spring. But Daniel gives us further information and says that from the time “the daily” is taken away and the “abomination that causes desolation” in Jerusalem is setup there will be 1290 days – which means it begins 30 days before the 1260 and if the 1260 begins around Passover then that means the “daily” will be taken away sometime around Purim! Now “the daily” used to refer to the morning and evening “daily” sacrifices but since the temple has been destroyed the Jewish sacrifice is a sacrifice of prayer at the Western Wall known as the Kotel. The word sacrifice is not found in Daniel 12 but has been supplied by later translators and you will often see it italicized showing it is added. The word in Hebrew for “daily” is tamid which means “that which is happening continually” and when that which is happening continually is taken away (in other words when the Jews are prevented from lifting their sacrifice of praise and prayer before Hashem at the Wailing Wall) it will be twelve hundred and ninety days until Messiah comes. This taking away of “the daily” is a type of decree just like Haman’s decree against God’s people and at the exact same time of year, Purim!
Two dates in the Book of Esther 30 days apart – Purim and Passover
If the Abomination that causes desolation is set up some future year at the time of Purim against God’s people by removing the daily continual prayers that are offered at the Western Wall, then 30 days later we see what is described in Revelation 11 being fulfilled in that Jerusalem begins to be trodden underfoot for 42 months = 1260 days = 3 1/2 years thus revealing that Purim and Passover are very significant events for us today in recognizing the enemy of God’s people and realizing our need for fasting and praying while looking forward to his miraculous Deliverance at the coming of Moshiach!
The Agenda of the Enemy (Spirit of Amalak) against God’s people in every generation.
In the macrocosm, the story of Esther is a depiction of the the Enemy (Spirit of Amalak) against God’s people in every generation. Exposing Haman is symbolic of exposing this agenda and seeking to stand with God’s people praying for their protection and blessing. As we seek to internalize and apply these principles spiritually to the microcosm of our individual lives we see how’s the real enemy is self and the false identity (ego) that leads us to sin is ultimately leading to our destruction.
So the trouble is not with the Torah, for it is spiritual and good. The trouble is with me, for I am all too human, a slave to sin. -Romans 7:14
Once Haman (the flesh) was put to death, Mordecai (God’s Spirit in us) is glorified and rules our being. This is what it means to be an overcomer… and this is my prayer for all of God’s children at all times and through out all the lands of our dispersion!
