What does it mean to be Grafted into Israel?

Many do not realize that God’s plan of reconciling and saving the world is by grafting them into the literal family of Israel and giving them the privilege of sharing in the promises God made to Israel concerning his covenant with Abraham, an inheritance in the land and a hope in the coming Messiah! Rabbi Shaul speaking to gentiles in Ephesus, Turkey says in Ephesians 2:12, remember that YOU [gentiles] were at that time separated from Messiah. You were excluded from inclusion among the people of the commonwealth of Israel, and you did not know the covenant promises God had made to them, thus you had no hope and without God in the world.

Literal Israel vs Spiritual Israel

This tells us the hope of the Nations is to be grafted into the Commonwealth of the “literal” Israel through Messiah, not the creation of a substitute “spiritual Israel” called the church… which is replacement theology the Enemy uses to keep people away from the Covenant and the Covenant document the Torah!

The way to God is by being grafted into Israel through Messiah!

A good confirmation of this is that there are only 12 gates into the future New Jerusalem and each gate is for a different tribe of Israel?  This means that there is no way to God’s temple and presence unless you are a part of the whole house of Israel.  But praise Yah, even if a person is not sure if they are a descendant of one of the tribes of Israel, God has made a way for those from the Nations (called “goyim” in hebrew and often translated “Gentile”) to convert to the One True God of Israel and become a part of His people just like the example of the Egyptians, and Midianites who converted and stood with our fore-fathers receiving the covenant at Mount Sinai!

Grafted in seen in the Torah:

Being “Grafted In” in not a new concept as it occurred at our Deliverance from Egypt with Egyptians and Medianites converting to the One True God of Israel and this mixed multitude entered into covenant at Sinai and received the Torah for themselves… just as those who desire to be grafted in today need to enter into the that same covenant God made with Israel and know that the Torah is still valid for the whole house of Israel and all those grafted into it, just as Numbers 15 outlines saying…

15 One ordinance shall be both for you (Israel) of the congregation, and also for the stranger (Gentile) that sojourns (is grafted in) with you (Israel), an ordinance for ever in your generations: as ye are (Israel), so shall the stranger (Gentile) be before the Lord. 16 One Torah and mishpat shall be for you (Israel), and for the stranger (Gentile) that sojourns (is grafted in) with you.

Grafted in seen also in the example of Ruth…

Also, Batyah daughter of Pharoah and Rachav, were women who converted and were grafted into Israel as adults. Both came from cultures—indeed, from families—steeped in idolatry and licentiousness, yet each left the past lives they were born into, recognized holiness and embraced it.

Rabbi Shaul (Paul) compares Israel to the natural branches of a cultivated olive tree and likens this Gentile “conversion” to the agricultural grafting process in Romans 11:11-24 with some of the natural branches (Israel) were temporarily broken off, and the wild branches of (Gentiles) grafted in, saying,

“And you [gentiles], although a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing root of the olive tree… remember it is not you who support the root, but the root that supports you.” (11:17-18)

So what is the root of the Tree and through what is a branch grafted in?

The Root is the Creator, and Messiah is the Grafter, grafting the Nations into the Olive tree which has always represented the Commonwealth of Israel through the ages.

John 1:12 says,

But as many as received Him (the Grafter Yeshua), to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:

But what no one is talking about is what was the Cause of some branches of the Olive tree being broken off… and how does it apply to those being grafted in today?

Jeremiah 11:16-17:

The Lord called thy name, A green olive tree, fair, and of goodly fruit: with the noise of a great tumult he hath kindled fire upon it, and the branches of it are broken. (Verse 17 tells us why) For the Lord of hosts, that planted thee, hath pronounced sin against thee, for the sin of the house of Israel and of the house of Judah, which they have done against themselves to provoke me to anger in offering incense unto Baal. (So the Lord is the Planter of the Olive tree of Israel and he broke off some bad branches that followed a pagan false worship system… to graft in some from the nations who would keep His covenant and follow His Torah!)  This is going to be a shocker for many as they are being taught that Messiah did away with the law and set up this false pagan system following false holidays instead of Yah’s Holy Days… but those who want to be a part of Covenant Israel will keep God Commandments!  Otherwise, as Rabbi Shaul says in Romans 11:20-21 “Be not highminded, but fear: 21for if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee.” Clarifying that if those grafted in through Messiah do not take heed and follow after pagan systems of worship like those who were cut off and not spared, then they too will not be spared!

But even with some bad branches broken off, God did not do away with the whole of Israel as the church promotes “replacement theology”… no God promised He will make Israel flourish by sending His Spirit to water the Olive tree of Israel!

“I will be like the dew to Israel; and he shall blossom like the lily; he shall take root like the trees of Lebanon; his shoots shall spread out; and his beauty shall be like the olive, and his fragrance like Lebanon.” (Hosea 14:5-6)

In Isaiah 49:3 God says, “You are my servant, O Israel, in whom I will be glorified.”

True Conversion into Israel “the Olive Tree”:

So true conversion is likened to someone who grew up like a “wild olive branch” outside of covenant with the One True God of Israel, being “grafted in” to the “Olive tree” which represents God’s covenant people of Israel… in other words, converting to the Jewish faith in the One true God of Israel and adopting the Jewish holy Scriptures, the Jewish understanding of God and his ways, and having a proper understanding of the Jewish Messiah.

At the beginning, the early believers were entirely Jewish. The disciples were all Jewish, the leaders were Jewish, the teaching was Jewish, and they were focusing only on Jews as their audience (Acts 11:19). The disciples were first known as “Christians” in Antioch, Greece (Acts 11:26) when Gentiles had also been brought into the kingdom. Were these “Christians” only Gentile? No. Did they believe something different theologically? No.  Thus, the faith of the true Believer who is “grafted in” is rooted in Judaism, and when a Jewish person accepts Yeshua as the prophet like Moshe that God promised in Deuteromy 18, they don’t leave the Jewish faith but have a fuller understanding of their own faith, not somebody else’s.

So in Yeshua the Messiah you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Messiah have clothed yourselves with Messiah. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Yeshua the Messiah. If you belong to the Messiah, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.”

We can rejoice in the identity God gave us, knowing that we have been made ONE BODY together in Messiah. Men and women do not lose their gender because they have been made one flesh in marriage – rather it is their difference that makes their union so glorious, and Jews and Gentiles do not lose their ethnic identity because they have been made one body in Messiah. It is a glory and a marvel that God has brought us together as one.

Again, in Ephesians 2:14-18 shows us God’s plan, desire and intention that we would be ONE:

For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.”

What God has joined together, let not man separate! Years of persecution at the hands of the church has made it difficult for Jewish believers to relate to their “Christian” brothers (many of which are actually descendants of Israel whose families have assimilated through the last 2000 years) but God does not see two different streams in his body. He sees one body… but that body needs to be unified in Yah’s Torah covenant to be apart of covenant Israel. We might have different culture and terminology but the essence of our beliefs and the basis of our salvation is exactly the same. Gentiles are to be grafted in and a part of the same tree. Not a different one.

It is God’s desire to reach out to all nations with salvation and his way of accomplishing that was through the people of Israel carrying the Scriptures, the experiences and the precious Seed of God. It is through the Jews that salvation has come, but this salvation brings us all into the one root, as he purposed from the beginning of time!  Hallelu Yah… Welcome to the Family!
