Gifts of the Holy Spirit

Q & A on the Gifts of the Spirit

Questions:

1.  In Acts 10:44 it tells about the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) falling on the Disciples and them speaking in tongues and praising God. Were these other tongues or their own native languages?

2.  Also; do you ever teach on the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and the teaching about it in 1 Corinthians chapter 12 about the 9 different gifts , that this is for today and people should be seeking to receive them?

Answer 1:

In Acts 2, the gift of tongues by its own definition, is the holy spirit speaking through a person in such a way that every man and woman (Gentile or Jew) hear’s the message of God’s love clearly and understandably in their own language.  It is not babbling or disruptive as it has a purpose to glorify God.  Acts 2:4-11 says that they were all filled with the ruach hakodesh (the Holy Spirit) and the men of God begin to speak in different languages, as the spirit enabled them to speak to convey the message of Messiah. Verse 8 and 11 says the people said

“how is it that we hear them speaking in our own native tongue about the great things God has done.”

In Acts 10:44 we see the ruach hakodesh falling upon those Gentiles hearing Peters message and it convicting their heart and them believing and receiving the gifts of the Spirit and being immersed in the Mikvah of baptism.  So we see the gift of tongues through the Holy Spirit has a purpose to give utterance both to the speaker as well as giving understanding to the Listener.

Answer 2:

I believe strongly in the gifts of the Spirit and I teach about the baptism both of water and of the spirit as our bodies are made of the things below which the water represents cleansing but our spirit is from above and needs to be renewed and transformed by the renewing of our minds through the power of the Spirit of truth from God.  As Yeshua said in John 16:13,

” when the spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth…”

It is a joy and a privilege to walk in the spirit and to encourage others to as well, as the written word without the spirit of the word is greatly lacking and often loses its power and foundation in love. The spirit of God, in love and through love, imbues some with a word of wisdom and others the word of knowledge but it is always in accordance with the same Spirit of Truth which confirms God’s law and does not erode from it.  It is through a pure and undefiled life that the spirit can heal and perform miracles through God’s children and through others prophecy and give the ability to judge and speak in different kinds of tongues… Just as the scripture says in James “the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much (emphasis on the need for us to be righteous so that the power of God’s spirit through us and our prayers can avail much).  If one is living a life that is defiled and full of sin, which is defined as transgressing the eternal principles of the creator, how can he hope to use the gifts of God through the spirit with any power?  So it is very exciting and wonderful to encourage our brothers and sisters to hunger and thirst after righteousness for his namesake… For as Daniel said in Daniel 12:3, ” those who can discern will shine like the brightness of Heavens expanse, and those who turn many to righteousness will shine like the stars forever and ever!”

The Difference between Gifts of the Spirit and Fruits of the Spirit

Spiritual gifts are not the same as the fruit of the Spirit. The Bible further clarifies the difference between gifts of the Spirit and fruits of the spirit.

The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the LORD— and he will delight in the fear of the LORD. He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears.  – Isaiah 11:2-3
